EPA fish Oil is better than DHA

DHA is critical during pregnancy for the development of the fetal brain and eyes. It is also important for the growth of the baby’s brain after birth.
Adults still need DHA for several functions, but as you get older the need to reduce inflammation also greatly increases. That’s where EPA comes in. EPA also has some other unique benefits for adults.
There is no magic EPA to DHA ratio, even though you will hear and read that there is. The truth is, both Omega-3 are extremely important and you need a lot of both.

Why EPA fish oil is important:

  • EPA protects the brain, the nervous system and the heart
  • EPA controls your body’s immunity
  • EPA fights disease by controlling inflammation
  • EPA is found in every cell of your body
  • EPA must be replenished every day with high EPA fish oil
  • EPA helps maintain health throughout your life

Where EPA Fish Oil is better than DHA

  1. EPA fish oil regulates inflammation
    • EPA regulates pro-inflammatory effects of Omega-6.  Reducing inflammation can reduce the pain of several age-related diseases associated with inflammation, like arthritis.
    • The reason why high EPA fish oil has such important benefits is because of its ability to alter the level of a hormone called Eicosanoids.
    • Eicosanoids are extremely powerful hormones. They control inflammation and pain.  But they also control many other hormones in the body. Bad diet and not getting enough EPA can cause Eicosanoids to get out of control
  2. High EPA fish oil reduces heart attack rates
    • Several clinical studies have shown the EPA can reduce death from major coronary events and heart disease
  3. EPA fish oil and mood disorders
  4. EPA fish oil and weight loss
    • EPA Omega-3 is involved in the brain’s hunger signals.  Too little EPA and your brain will tell your stomach that it is extra-hungry. Even if you just ate!

High-EPA Fish oil mitigates Mood Disorders – DHA does not.

More than a dozen successful trials of Omega-3 for mood related disorders, including depression, bipolar disorder, have used EPA primarily or exclusively. No benefits were found in studies using DHA only.

Scientific Proof:
  1. American Journal of Psychiatry. 2003. 160:996-998 concluded that DHA was no more effective in treating major depression than placebo.
  2. Schizophrenia Research. 2001. 49(3): 243-251 showed that EPA was superior to DHA in treating schizophrenia.
  3. Archives of General Psychiatry. 2002. 59: 913-919 showed that adding EPA to the regimen of prescription drugs yielded better results than drugs alone.

Prescription EPA Fish Oil?

Lovaza is not the only prescription drug made from fish oil.
Based on all the positive science behind EPA Omega-3, there are two pharmaceutical drugs that are highly purified, pharmaceutical grade EPA Fish Oil.
  1. EPADEL, is an approved drug in Japan for heart disease (arteriosclerosis) and elevated blood fats (triglycerides and cholesterol.)
  2. MIRAXION, is still in development in the United States. MIRAXION is almost identical to EPADEL but it is marketed for neuroprotection or preventing brain tissue damage and preventing inflammation.
There are going to be several more drugs made from pharmaceutical grade fish oil.
For now, if you are trying to improve your joint health or mental health, it is critical that you take an effective dose of high EPApharmaceutical grade fish oil.
